Metronidazole Tablet 200mg
DESCRIPTION
Metronidazole is an anti-protozoal agent effective against Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica and in giardiasis. Metronidazole is useful for the treatment of infections caused by various anaerobic bacteria, particularly Bacteroides fragilis.
INGREDIENT
Each Tablet contains 200mg Metronidazole
INDICATIONS
Urogenital trichomoniasis
Amoebiasis
Giardiasis
Ulcerative gingivitis (Vincent's infection)
Infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, especially Bacteroides fragilis.
As a prophylactic in postsurgical abdominal and pelvic infections.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
One day treatment:
10 Tablets of Metronidazole given either as a single dose or in two divided doses of 5 tablets each, given on the same day.
Seven day treatment:
1 Tablet three times daily for 7 consecutive days.
CAUTIONS
Side-effects reported include gastrointestinal discomfort, anorexia, nausea, coated tongue, unpleasant metallic taste, headaches, skin rashes, and, less frequently, Central Nervous System effects (e.g. convulsive seizures, peripheral neuropathy, dizziness, vertigo, incoordination, ataxia, confusion, irritability, depression, weakness and insomnia (reversible), urethral discomfort, darkening of the urine, and reversible leukopaenia.
Metronidazole should be used only in the 7 day regimen in pregnant patients during the second and third trimesters. When taken in conjunction with alcohol may provoke a disulfiram-type effect.
Metronidazole should not be used in patients with blood dyscrasias or active disease of the Central Nervous System.
Metronidazole is excreted in the milk and must not be used by lactating women.
